"We need this work in Peel"

On Wednesday, November 17th, the Health and Racism Working Group hosted a meet 'n' greet at the East Mississauga Community Centre.

Community members, students, and workers from Peel and Toronto came together (most did not know one another!) to discuss issues of race and equity in Peel, to share healthy food, and to connect.

A short clip from the Tim Wise film "Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equity" was screened, leading to discussion about the differences between the U.S., and Canada in relation to issues of race. There was also discussion about the work and role of allies (Tim Wise is a white man), which connected to the 2009 Symposium "Ally or A(Lie)."

Anti-racist, equity-focused work is needed in Peel Region - the need for that work connected with those present at the meet 'n' greet, and Health and Racism Working Group looks forward to continuing such dialogues.

Thanks to those who helped make the evening happen!
