This past Saturday (February 26, 2011), the Health and Racism Working Group hosted a forum on employment equity, facilitated by our amazing Employment Equity Advocates - Wariri Muhungi and Devi Mohabir.
There was a great turnout of community members and workers with different connections to Peel and to the community services sector. Using participatory exercises including sociometrics and the "pizza" activity, Devi and Wariri created space for dialogue about the pressing concerns of equity and INequity.
With help from volunteers Jaspreet and Sabrena, and some context provided by Avvy Go and Michael Kerr from the Colour of Poverty - Colour of Change, it was an afternoon of personal reflection about how our own social locations inform the way we do anti-racist work, talking through the difficulties in doing this work in Peel, and strategizing!
Thanks to SNAP! for coming to report on the event!
The community engagement project has begun in earnest - if you are interest in having a conversation about equity facilitated at your workplace, or in your community, please get in touch at equitymississauga@gmail.com
Look forward to another forum in the very near future!
