Spring Update!

Spring is here, and summer is just around the corner!

The Health and Racism Working Group participated in a zine-making workshop, facilitated by LeRoi Newbold, where we learned about the history of zines, got to flip through some of LeRoi's collection, and learned a binding technique! A zine is the expressive arts project we are taking on, for 2011.

According to the Art Gallery of Ontario, a zine is
"...a non-commercial, non professional publication, kind of like a magazine but with a twist. The main difference between a magazine and a zine is that zines are not out there to make a profit but, rather, to add other unheard voices into the mix. Zines are usually made out of interest and passion and are often self-published... Typically, zines are made using collage techniques and are then photocopied since these are means available to almost everyone."

For the Health and Racism Working Group, we have been having conversations about work - the lack of it, the precariousness of work these days, and of course about employment equity through our project led by Wariri and Devi. How can we encourage these conversations to happen in every more spaces? The t-shirts were very successful last year, in part, because people were interested in how to take the messages to multiple venues. A zine is a great way for us to consolidate some of the conversations we have had, some of the experiences we may have as frontline workers (e.g. what are the struggles and successes of the community members you work with, in terms of work?)

Zines, in their incarnation and use are great tools for dialogue and revolutionary thinking!
