Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

A new year!
Change those calendars, getting ready for an extra day of work (February 29th), and consider the equity dimensions of the 2012 being the International Year of Cooperatives and the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

In 2011, the Health and Racism Working Group ...
  • continued work on the Employment Equity Project by
    • hosting Employment Equity forums in both February and April, as well as a session on Employment Equity during HaR's annual Symposium in July
    • compiled research thanks to the dedicated work of Jaspreet, a placement student from the University of Toronto Mississauga (Women and Gender Studies)
  • held our annual Anti-Oppression training for all core members
  • joined the social media world with our own Twitter account
  • chose zine-making as our annual expressive arts project, and had LeRoi Newbold facilitate zine-making workshops for HaR members in May, and for community members at our annual Symposium in July
  • had a table at the annual Race Against Racism in June
  • organized our annual symposium - for 2011, our symposium was entitled "Work It!" and featured
    • welcome by Crystal Perryman-Mark
    • workshops on zine-making (LeRoi Newbold), Stop Wage Theft! (Beixi Liu from the Workers Action Centre), Employment Equity (Devi Mohabir)
    • videos made by racialized seniors, made with the support of Bramalea Community Health Centre
    • performances by MR and LAL
    • remarks by Salimah Valiani from the Ontario Nurses Association
    • a talk by Abeer and Yogi from No One Is Illegal
    • community booths

In 2012, we are looking forward to ...
  • releasing our employment equity toolkit, as a final outcome of the Employment Equity Project
  • launching a workshop series on racism
  • making more of a mark in the online world (podcasts, here we come!)
  • our annual Symposium in Spring 2012
  • and much more!
